I don't mean to imply that you don't know something basic but do you know that AE is not video editor but rather a compositor? Apologies if you did. There are plenty of cheaper video editing apps. Not a lot of compositing apps. Some people think it's another form of Premiere. I found this. I never used any compositor but AE but this one is free and it may work for you:

You don't want to start with After Effects. It's very involved and is something you tackle after you've gotten editing down. You may want to look into Premiere Elements to get started in editing. It's about $70. Work your way up to Premiere Pro. You'll know when you're ready for more.
