how do i extract pure capsaicin?
i know how to do it with a result being a dark red liquid with the consistency of molasses but what i want to know is how to extract capsaicin into a crystal or a clear liquid with a consistency of something similar to water, i have seen both for sale online and i want to know how they do it, online those two forms range from 100 to 150 dollars... this is why i want to do it on my own so i don't have to pay so much. so can anyone help me i am extracting the capsaicin from many bhut jolokia peppers.
Dry the peppers out until they lose no more mass in water weight.
Grind the peppers up into as fine of a powder as you can.
Put pepper powder in a glass vessel with a tight cap that fits it.
Pure capsaicin is hydrophobic , so it can only be extracted with alcohols or oil based solvents.
The best solvent is starting fluid (try to get pure diethyl ether without upper cylinder lubricant) If you can't get pure diethyl ether or hexane starting fluid then use pure ethanol alcohol.
Fill the vessel with about 700% more liquid than powder material and let it soak overnight with cap on vessel
Get a pointy coffee filter and pour contents of powdered pepper and ether solution thru the filter into another glass jar.
Set the jar out in the sun and stir occasionally until all the ether evaporates. Weigh the batch, and when the weight is no longer decreasing you have evaporated the ether.
The remains are close to pure capsaicin. To make it purer you could remix with more ether and redistill one more time
If you use food grade ethanol, you do the same distillation process, but you leave a little alcohol behind which helps distribute the capsaicin more evenly. So if you use ether for extraction, you might want to add a little 150 rum to the pepper to extend it a little and be able to dispense it better
