Build Your Own CNC Machine

Build Your Own CNC Machine

$39.99

Do you like to build things? Are you ever frustrated at having to compromise your designs to fit whatever parts happen to be available? Would you like to fabricate your own parts? Build Your Own CNC Machine is the book to get you started. CNC expert Patrick Hood-Daniel and best-selling author James Kelly team up to show you how to construct your very own CNC machine. Then they go on to show you how to use it, how to document your designs in Computer-Aided Design programs, and how to output your designs as specifications and tool paths that feed into the CNC machine, controlling it as it builds whatever parts your imagination can dream up. Don't be intimidated by abbreviations like CNC and terms like Computer-Aided Design. Patrick and James have chosen a CNC-machine design that is simple to fabricate. You need only basic woodworking skills and a budget of perhaps $500 to $1,000 to spend on the wood, a router, and various other parts that you'll need. With some patience and some follow-through, you'll soon be up and running with a really fun machine that'll unleash your creativity and turn your imagination into physical reality.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) controllers are high value-added products counting for over 30% of the price of machine tools. The development of CNC technology depends on the integration of technologies from many different industries, and requires strategic long-term support. a oeTheory and Design of CNC Systemsa covers the elements of control, the design of control systems, and modern open-architecture control systems. Topics covered include Numerical Control Kernel (NCK) design of CNC, Programmable Logic Control (PLC), and the Man-Machine Interface (MMI), as well as the major modules for the development of conversational programming methods. The concepts and primary elements of STEP-NC are also introduced. A collaboration of several authors with considerable experience in CNC development, education, and research, this highly focused textbook on the principles and development technologies of CNC controllers can also be used as a guide for those working on CNC development in industry.

Manufacturing Automation: Metal Cutting Mechanics, Machine Tool Vibrations, and CNC Design

$87.65

Metal cutting is a widely used method of producing manufactured products. The technology of metal cutting has advanced considerably along with new materials, computers, and sensors. This new edition treats the scientific principles of metal cutting and their practical application to manufacturing problems. It begins with metal cutting mechanics, principles of vibration, and experimental modal analysis applied to solving shop floor problems. Notable is the in-depth coverage of chatter vibrations, a problem experienced daily by manufacturing engineers. The essential topics of programming, design, and automation of CNC (computer numerical control) machine tools, NC (numerical control) programming, and CAD/CAM technology are discussed. The text also covers the selection of drive actuators, feedback sensors, modeling and control of feed drives, the design of real time trajectory generation and interpolation algorithms, and CNC-oriented error analysis in detail. Each chapter includes examples drawn from industry, design projects, and homework problems. This book is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as practicing engineers.

Chapters: Numerical Control. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 212. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Numerical control (NC) refers to the automation of machine tools that are operated by abstractly programmed commands encoded on a storage medium, as opposed to manually controlled via handwheels or levers, or mechanically automated via cams alone. The first NC machines were built in the 1940s and '50s, based on existing tools that were modified with motors that moved the controls to follow points fed into the system on paper tape. These early servomechanisms were rapidly augmented with analog and digital computers, creating the modern computed numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools that have revolutionized the design process. In modern CNC systems, end-to-end component design is highly automated using CAD/CAM programs. The programs produce a computer file that is interpreted to extract the commands needed to operate a particular machine via a post processor, and then loaded into the CNC machines for production. Since any particular component might require the use of a number of different toolsdrills, saws, etc.modern machines often combine multiple tools into a single "cell." In other cases, a number of different machines are used with an external controller and human or robotic operators that move the component from machine to machine. In either case, the complex series of steps needed to produce any part is highly automated and produces a part that closely matches the original CAD design. The automation of machine tool control began in the 1800s with cams that "played" a machine tool in the way that cams had long been playing musical boxes or operating elaborate cuckoo clocks. Thomas Blanchard built his gun-stock-copying lathes (1820s-30s), and the work of people such as Christ...More: http: //booksllc.net/?id=69334

cnc machine wood
3D program to CAD/CnC cutter machine?

Wondering if anyone knows/has done like...

Making an object in blender or Modo or something, and transferred then cut it out of wood or whatever on a CnC machine?

(Most compatible file format?)
Yess... (And that's probably the best answer I'll get :)

But I was wondering if there was any way to put a well drawn object in cad/cam software and pick the machining lines, rather than make it from scratch?

(any cgi thing could become a wood carving, and then I'm a moulding/casting guy, so I could make a prop/mask out of Any face)

You need a CAD/CAM application (Computer Aided Manufacturing) but I don't think you can get a good one for free. There is a Linux project called EMC, but it is mainly DNC/backplotting not really toolpath generation http://www.linuxcnc.org/

Basically you need to define tool type, path & strategy for cutting the CAD shape. Then you need to "post process" those procedures into G-CODE specifc to your machine controller. Every controller has features that make their G-CODE unique. Simple DXF to G-CODE (NC language) software can cost less than $100 but you really don't get much flexibility for post-processing to these specific controllers.

The fussier you are about results, the more you will need to shop around and possibly the more you will pay.
