Laptop is overheating?
I hate my laptop. There, I said it.
I have a crappy Gateway that I bought on clearance (yeah, yeah, I know, bad idea). I've dragged it through almost a year of life, and my one major complaint is that it overheats insanely fast, especially when I'm using the graphics card (watching movies, playing games, etc.).
Earlier today (technically yesterday, to the world without insomnia), I tested to see if an ice pack would keep my gameplay smooth and not "choppy", like it normally is when it starts to overheat. It wasn't perfect, but it was definitely better.
I'm not looking for ways to stop it from overheating - the best would be to just never turn it on. I'm trying to find ways to prevent it from overheating to the point that it burns my lap or cannot be touched anywhere near the heat vent. Would one of those laptop desks work - you know, the kind that has the fans that plug into your USB ports? Or is there something really obvious that I'm missing completely?

The laptop cooler pads do work as long as the airflow from them is directed towards the inlet of your laptop. Each different laptop is designed a little different, but most have their air inlets in the bottom. Try to find a cooler pad with a fan that blows upwards and happens to be in line with the air inlet on your laptop. If the pad blows out the sides it basically does nothing to help the cooling of your laptop. In order to increase the efficiency of your laptop's cooling system, you must increase the air pressure at the point of entry to your laptop's air cooling loop, and the best way to do that is with a directed flow of air from a fan.
Also, heat syncs get clogged pretty easy on laptops because they are quite small. A can of compressed air directed backwards through your cooling system with your computer off can do wonders to restore your laptop's ability to transfer heat. Just buy a can of air (like Endust), and with your computer off, spray the air through the holes where the hot air normally comes out of. This won't get everything, but it will significantly reduce the amount of blockage in the heat exchanger (heat sync). The best way to clean it would be to remove the bottom panel and pick the lint out of the heat exchanger, but that's risky for an untrained person to do.
