Should I change my guitar pickups?
Hello everybody, I got an ibanez gio grx40 and I want to change the pickups, my ibanez has two single and one humbucker,it has the 5 pickup position thing and I was wondering if it was a good idea to change the pickups for some fender noisless. Of course I want a fender but they are to expensive for me and I want to get something like them even though its not the same, my ibanez is just gaining dust so what do you think? I want that guitar to play some rock and mainly for some clear tones....the problem is that Im not sure if its worth or my other option is my ltd kh-202 which I could change the neck pickup only to have or get a beautiful clear tone , what do you think?
First thing to do is take the plug out of the guitar and play it, if it doesn't cut it unplugged no amount of electric/electronic magic will put in tone that isn't there to begin with. [Bit of imagination required to hear what is "Good" in an unplugged solid body, but not imagination is needed to tell dead spots and wolf tones] These guitars have bodies made of at best agathis, or worse, basswood: Basswood is what architects put on the walls of auditoriums to kill the sound, so it's not what I'm thinking will produce a good tone.
It costs as much to make a bad pickup as it does to make a good one, so nobody is cutting corners by putting bad pups on entry level guitars. Changing pups will give a different voicing, but you need to identify the change in voicing you are aiming for, just putting Fender pickups on will not give it the punch and clarity that comes from having a body made of good tone-woods, well selected.
