sheltering your kids...............?
i babysit a boy who will be 4 in a month. the parents don't let him play with pretend swords or "bad guy" action figures or superhero things, and sometimes he rolls up a magazine and wants to pretent its a sword, they don't let him do any of that. he even gets toys at mcdonalds that they say are bad. they aren't religious but it seems like they are being a little too strict. he can't watch power rangers or batman or anything. is this normal? it seems weird to me, its like they treat him like a girl. usually we just play with his kitchen set or blues clues preschool stuff. he will be in kindergarten in a year, and he is scared of spongebob. i was just wondering if anyone else does this. i feel bad for the kid. he doesn't even play cowboy because they have guns. kind of sad to me.
They are trying to be the best parents that they can be! We all have different approaches, but bottom line is this:
If it is not abusive or neglectful, then it's their decision how to raise their children.
We may not always agree with the approach used by different parents, it's not our decision.
As his baby sitter the absolute best thing you can do for him is to follow the guidelines his parents have set down for him, to the best of your ability.
You may realize that it's going to be impossible to carry on this style of parenting once he goes into kindergarten, but it's not your place to try to make changes.
In a child's life consistancy is important. And it starts with the parents and ends with who they have watching him. Be thankful that they trust you enough to allow you to babysit for him. It's a big deal, believe it or not, for parents to leave their children (especially first kids) and the baby sitter is special and important. A tough decision for any parent!
As time goes on, they will either continue with this style and he will learn to embrace their values or they will lighten up and let go a little (I'm really thinking the latter will happen sooner or later, lol).
It's hard for me to critisize another parent's parenting style, I'm happy that I'm allowed to choose my own unique style and I know how tough it is to be a parent in these days and times.
Being a 'little too strict' may be their reaction to the way they were raised too. There are so many factors in our parenting styles, it's best to just do your best to uphold their authority and enjoy your time with him!
