Help! How the heck do you divide regular divisions and subdivisions?
I'm having trouble with my music theory homework. I'm a beginner and it's my first time to take a music theory class. I can't seem to understand what regular/simple divisions (Rhythm). In my homework, they give a beat unit (e.g. whole note) and I have to divide it into one division and two subdivisions under it.
I've been reading and rereading my textbook for an hour and I'm still confused. Please help! I have to submit this by tomorrow.
An easy way to remember: just keep dividing by two
Each whole note is worth two half notes,
Each half note is worth two quarter notes,
Each quarter note is worth two eighth notes,
Each eighth note is worth two sixteenth notes
And so on (as you progress in music you will learn of 32nd notes and others)
There are 2 half notes in one whole note, 4 quarter notes in one whole note, 8 eighth notes in one whole note, and 16 sixteenth notes in one whole note.
Edit: I forgot to mention...
On the same page as notes, "rests" work the same way. Rests are when there is no sound, or beat. Just silence (the opposite of a note, which is sound). There are whole rests, half rests, eighth rests, etc, just like there are with notes.
Each whole rest is worth two half rests,
Each half rest is worth two quarter rests,
Each quarter rest is worth two eighth rests,
Each eighth rest is worth two sixteenth rests
and so on...
