Window Air Conditioner Unit: fix or replace?
We bought our window unit slightly used when we first got married, almost 4 years ago. It's only 5-6 years old. When we started using it this spring, it was leaking water after a few hours of running, which didn't worry us too much. Then, two nights ago, the room was overly warm when we woke up, and the unit was blowing room-temp air. It worked fine again last night, until I woke up to some horrible sounds, almost like cracking sounds, and when I got to the unit, it was barely blowing at all (even though it was on high), but the air was somewhat cool.
Now to the question... it is definitely not worth calling a repairman over, but is there something we could take a look at in the unit or do we just need to trash it?
The evaporator is freezing, The cracking you hear is the ice melting, that's when it leaks onto the floor. try pulling it out, take it outside, spray the two coils with a water / Dawn dish liquid mix, then spray with a water hose. If it still acts up after drying and reinstalling, then it's low on refrigerant and is not worth repairing. They are too affordable brand new.
